Hello, and welcome to another Netflix Dumpster Dive! Once again, I miss my deadline, but at the very least, I got the post out the right month this time. I’m trying to get better, but college is creeping up fast and there has been many an errand to run in preparation.
This month we’re going to be taking a look at one of my favorite black comedy films. I think this is probably one of the most well known movies I’ve done, if not the most, so many of you probably have heard of it, but if not, then you are in for a treat. Without further ado, let’s talk about Super.

Super is a movie in which a dorky, Christian man loses his wife to a drug lord and becomes a vigilante to end crime and hunt down the man who stole his wife from him. Starring The Office’s Rainn Wilson as our hero, Ellen Page as his sidekick, and Kevin Bacon as the villain, the cast is amazing. I especially am in love with Kevin Bacon’s performance as the bad guy, good God does that man play evil douchebag well.
The whole plot of the movie is really interesting, as it constantly acknowledges how ridiculous the idea of a real superhero would be. Not only that, it acknowledges that if a person took it upon themselves to beat the living hell out of criminals, said criminals probably wouldn’t be getting back up when they get hit with a heavy, metal wrench. All the while, it explores how brutally flawed and broken the hero’s worldview is, and how people probably wouldn’t revere him, they’d be terrified of him.
Super brings a lot of great black humor to the table as well. I won’t lie, I’m a twisted bastard. That does not take away from what the movie brings. I’ve watched this movie in the past with people who don’t normally dabble in the morbid and they loved it. Can’t stress enough that this is a great movie to watch with friends, especially if someone in the group has yet to see it.
I can’t say too much more about the movie for the sake of not spoiling too much. I apologize for the short post, especially after waiting so long to do this. In any case, I highly recommend this film to anyone. Really, anyone. If you’re a little squeamish or emotionally fragile, you may want to think on it, but other than that, there is absolutely no reason not to give Super a watch.
Overall Personal Rating: 8/10
