Regardless of how many movies attempt to tackle time and time travel, it’s always exciting to see one that takes a different approach to the topic. Time Trap is one such movie. While its plot is not entirely new, it is a relatively fresh take on movies with time as a central device.

Time Trap gives away a lot of its details in its title, but leaves just as much out. Starting out as a fairly ordinary movie and steadily evolving further and further into something entirely different, I found myself liking the movie more than I expected.
The central plot device of a cave that obscures time is interesting, and while it’s not the first time something like this has happened, I can’t think of another movie that does it well. Time Trap doesn’t attempt to over-explain or give a “good reason” for the cave other than a single line, and that line is all it needs to get me to suspend my disbelief. Some may disappointed they don’t get a why or how, but personally I like that I felt as out of depth as the movie’s cast.
Throughout the first two acts of the movie, the mystery and suspense is on point. I was sucked in by the atmosphere up until the last 30 minutes. While I wouldn’t call the third act “bad,” it certainly felt a little too fantastical for my taste, and I think that the ending cheapens some of the consequences of these characters’ missteps. It wasn’t terrible, but I did feel let down that this group was so easily able to recoup their losses.
All in all, Time Trap makes good use of its central plot device and mythos, and has strong plot and pacing until the final third. While the last third was far from bad by any means, it did not resonate as strongly as the rest of the film, and I feel that it reverts the punch of the consequences.
This movie is worth a watch, especially given its reasonable 90 minute runtime and its interesting concepts. While I did not enjoy the ending, it’s a matter of taste and doesn’t ruin the movie in the slightest.
