Welcome to 2020. I’ve been sitting on Netflix Dumpster Dive for a month, wanting to let my post on The Witcher ride out January as the general public caught up on the show. Now, I’m back for more. I plan on doing more seasons of shows in the future, as I’m finding that the television front has been, in general, giving a wider variety of content with a higher degree of entertainment than what I’ve found in films as of late. That being said, I do have another film I want to touch on this month.
It Comes at Night is an interesting, intimate film that explores human nature. I approached it expecting the psychological, but additionally, wanting there to be a more supernatural aspect, as the title suggested. However, the way the movie handles its theme and characters gives the title new meaning and offers an extremely satisfying if not sobering thriller.
In the interest of preserving a prospective audience from spoilers, here’s my quick two cents: This movie is about isolation and paranoia, and how these afflictions affect how people treat each other. The movie explores these ideas in a bleak and intimate setting, extremely well. If that sounds like your type of movie, please go watch it, it’s a fun experience.
For those who are on the fence, the recommendation I would give is contingent upon what your preference is. It Comes at Night is grounded, up close, and doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to emotions. It does not end happy, it does not feel good, and there are some scenes that are outright unsettling. These are all ideas I personally enjoy very much, and if that’s your thing, you would like this movie as well. If you want something less grim, more fantastical, this isn’t that kind of horror, and you should probably pass.
Rating: 6.5/10
Thank you for reading! If you want to be notified of when the next Netflix Dumpster Dive comes out, feel free to follow the site, and you can also follow me on Twitter. I published my new fantasy book in July of 2018, and it’d mean the world if you’d check it out, and if it’s not your cup of tea, share it with someone who might like it. Thanks again, and I hope to see you here next time.
